Former first lady, Michelle Obama, made her first TV appearance on The Ellen Show since leaving the White House and instead of focusing on her life or discussing real world issues, the two used this opportunity to make fun of Melania Trump’s kind gesture to Michelle when they greeted each other during President Trump’s inauguration.
On the day of the inauguration, Melania strode up to Michelle and gifted her with a beautifully wrapped Tiffany & Co. box. Michelle made a disgusted face and quickly gave the box to her husband, who took it inside.
The media went into a frenzy over this moment last year and yesterday was no different, when Michelle Obama and Ellen DeGenerous tore into Melania Trump, snidely narrating the footage while watching the moment replay on an enormous screen.
“When the transfer was happening, when Donald Trump and his wife were moving into the White House, there was a gift exchange,” the Ellen reminds viewers in an episode airing Thursday.
“The Tiffany’s box,” Michelle responded – clearly agitated by the memory.
Both Michelle and Ellen began making fun of President Trump saying that he “left his wife behind.”
Then all hell broke loose and Michelle started griping over the fact that Melania had totally broken protocol. Given her reaction, you would really think Michelle had never received a gift before. She was totally ungrateful and could only complain about the now-First Lady.
“There’s all this protocol,” she said watching a clip of the exchange playing on a large screen behind her. “This is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here.”
“Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘OK, what am I supposed to do with this gift?’” Obama scathed, “Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box, and I’m thinking, ‘Do we take the picture with (it)?’ And then my husband saved the day — see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out — no staff, no one. I was like, ‘What do you do with the box?’”
